ABALOU CAPOEIRA: A CELEBRATION OF BRAZILIAN CULTURE IN BROOKLYN—CAPOEIRA, SAMBA, AND MUSIC FOR ALL AGES!

Saturday, November 7, 2015

Trinity Grace Church, 231 Ainslie St, Williamsburg, Brooklyn

(between Manhattan Ave and Graham Ave, L train to Graham Ave)

10 AM-3PM

$10 suggested donation for spectators, $25 for samba class (10 AM), $30 t-shirt/play in capoeira roda (11 AM)

Join Capoeira Brooklyn and Motumbaxé Capoeira for Abalou Capoeira, a unique celebration of Brazilian culture and customs, featuring a samba class for adults and kids, a folkloric dance-off, and a traditional capoeira baptism ceremony, culminating in an all-ages dance party led by Afro-Brazilian percussion band Batala NYC!

The first event of its kind, Abalou (literal translation: to shake) Capoeira is a rare collaboration between two capoeira masters of separate groups, Brazilian natives and longtime Brooklyn residents Mestre Foca of Capoeira Brooklyn and Mestre Lampréia of Motumbaxé Capoeira. We welcome the community to join us for a day of culture and fun, featuring capoeiristas and capoeira masters from around Brazil, the US, and Canada; a samba class for all ages led by Quenia Ribeiro (Alvin Ailey); a performance of maculelê, a folkloric warrior dance; and a high-energy appearance by New York City's own all-woman samba-reggae percussion band, Batala NYC.
